“I N F O R M AT I V E ,” “Networking opportunities,” “Great speakers” – these are comments that could be heard at the Truck Training Schools Associations of Ontario’s (TTSAO) 4th Annual Conference,

Striving for Excellence, held in Mississauga Ontario on Wednesday February 27 and Thursday February 28 at the Centre for Health and Safety Innovation (CHSI). Thank you to all the sponsors who helped make these two days memorable and special, many of whom have sponsored this event from its conception.

With over 120 delegates from all aspects of the transportation industry including, but not limited to, government, carriers, insurance, and of course training schools. Even though the weather on Wednesday was not the greatest, the Conference forged ahead with a Board of Directors Meeting, a TTSAO Carrier Gerald Carroll, Operations and Safety Manager, Wesbell Logistics CONTINUES TO GROW Group Meeting, a TTSAO Insurance Group Meeting and the Annual General Meeting
to wrap up the afternoon.

Once all the meetings had taken place, delegates gathered for networking and cocktails, surrounded by sponsor booths. The group was treated to a candid one-on-one interview hosted by Dave McDonald (owner of Revolution Staffing), who posed questions to Glenn Caldwell (NAL Insurance) on ‘The Power of Networking.” I’m sure that everybody in the room took something valuable away from this open discussion.

Day two of the Conference was jammed packed with stand-alone presentations, panel discussions and state-of-the-art technology trends. To kick off the day,
Enzo Garritano, President and CEO of the IHSA, welcomed the delegates and spoke about the transportation industry and its relationship with the TTSAO. This was followed by an update from the Ministry of Transportation about mandatory Entry Level Driver Training (MELT).

Newly elected TTSAO Chair, Ken Adams, was introduced to the delegates and said he was excited for the Conference and gladdened by the support the event has received as well as its growth year after year.

Kimberly Biback (Sharp Transportation Systems Inc.) gave ariveting presentation on ‘Social Media, Don’t be Unliked.’ Kimberly talked bout the growth of social media over the last few years and how it plays a role in not only our business lives, but also how it influences our personal lives as well. ‘Best Practices for Training’ was up next and saw Geoff Topping (Challenger Motor Freight) moderate a panel that was

uniquely comprised of two carriers and two schools. From the Carrier side the panel consisted of Garth Pitzel (Bison Transport) and Leanne Quail (Paul Quail Transport); while from the Driving School side we had Matt Richardson (KRTS Transportation Specialists Inc.) and Philip Fletcher (Commercial Heavy Equipment Training). This panel discussed Best Practices from both a Carrier and from a Training School perspective. All panelists did a great job and shared their personal experiences of dealing with challenges within the industry while striving to achieve Best Practices.

An ‘Industry Association’ panel had Kelly Henderson (THRSC Atlantic) moderate a never seen before panel of industry experts from the OTA/CTA (Stephen  Laskowski), the PMTC (Mike Millian) and the FSC (Charlie Charalambous) as they discussed the value of associations and how they can support the schools. They discussed the benefits of associations helping their members and how when all is said and done each association has the same goal: To Make Our  Industry Better than the Way They Found It.

someone’s identity to the latest in ways to protect your freight (and how to track it), Michael wowed the delegates with his company’s state of the art technology.

AWARDS, PRESENTATIONS
AND SALUTES

Glenn Caldwell, on behalf of Trucking for Wishes, accepted a donation from the TTSAO in lieu of panelists and speakers receiving a gift.

Philip Fletcher received the TTSAO Appreciation Award for his countless hours as the Treasure of the organization and now has assumed the role as Vice
Chairperson of the TTSAO.

Conference Master of Ceremonies Guy Broderick from Apps Transport Group did another outstanding job keeping the sessions on schedule and keeping all the
delegates engaged.

Kim Richardson, President of the TTSAO, thanked the TTSAO Conference Committee for another outstanding job pulling everything together and presenting another successful Conference. Kim also gave a special thank you to the sponsors, some of whom have been with us from the beginning. Without your support, none of this would be possible.
