On March 2, 2021, the Honourable Federal Transport Minister Omar Alghabra announced that the Canadian Federal ELD Mandate, coming into force on June 12, 2021,

will begin with an enforcement roll out that involves education and awareness only, with no penalties to carriers at the start of the mandate. This is great news for the industry and position for the PMTC, which has been very vocal in pursuing this movement for many months now.

The PMTC is very pleased with this announcement and congratulates the Minister and his team for making this commitment. With no certified devices currently on Transport Canada’s list of approved devices, this is the only reasonable way to move forward. The extra time will allow more ELD’s to prepare and submit for certification and provide carriers more time to pick from an adequate list of approved devices.

The PMTC looks forward to continuing to work with Transport Canada, the Canadian Council of Transport Ministers, the provinces and other stakeholders to work on a phased-in road map that works for industry and enforcement alike. The PMTC, as they have always been, continue to be fully in favour of the ELD mandate and the third party certification process. The Association’s only concern has been having enough time for its members, and the rest of the industry, to be able to transition with an adequate list of certified devices to choose from. This announcement alleviates a lot of those concerns.
