The Brick, Home Hardware recognized by Top Fleet Employers
Two private fleets have made their mark in Trucking HR Canada's Top Fleet Employers program, which has recognized 22 of the best workplaces in Canada’s trucking industry.
National fleets operated by The Brick and Home Hardware Stores Ltd. were both honoured after being rated on topics including employee recognition, compensation, lifestyle, employee engagement, wellness, professional development, recruitment and retention. Related reviews included a comprehensive online application, hard-copy submissions, employee surveys and follow-up interviews.
Ratings were also expanded in this second year of the program to reflect active involvement in charitable or environmental initiatives, both of which Trucking HR Canada says are particularly valued by young “Generation Y” employees.
They were not the only recognized fleets with private roots. SLH Transport and Linamar Transportation offer for-hire services, but respectively serve Sears and Linamar operations as well. Ryder Canada also serves many private clients.

“These 22 fleets demonstrate a broad array of industry best practices,” says Tamara Miller, Trucking HR Canada’s director – programs and services. “Their employees clearly understand performance expectations. Unique initiatives ranged from regular Multicultural Days honouring a fleet’s diverse workforce, to charitable programs that actively engaged employees.”
“A key theme we noticed is that those who work for these fleets feel like they are more than a number. They see themselves as an important part of a larger team -- or even as a family,” she adds.
“These fleets are helping to tackle the trucking industry’s intensifying shortage of employees, and realizing the business benefits of better workplaces today,” says Angela Splinter, Chief Executive Officer of Trucking HR Canada. The program recognized 10 fleets in 2014.
“We hope to see an even longer list in the 3rd annual program. There is no limit to the number of fleets that can be recognized,” Splinter says.“Not every application is successful, but we encourage every fleet to continue with ongoing investments in human resources practices. It makes business sense, and it will bring you closer to recognition by Top Fleet Employers. Most important, it will help to recruit and retain skilled employees.”
Top Fleet Employers’ selection criteria reflects Canadian human resources issues, trends and working environments, and has been validated by a panel of trucking industry experts and a Certified Human Resource Leader (CHRL). It also echoes Trucking HR Canada’s standards of excellence and considers every position in a fleet.
Private fleets are scored using a system that reflects their unique working environments and requirements .
