Your private fleet’s name and brand represent more than a service: it defines your team, your company’s values, and your presence and impact throughout the community.
Each and every day, within your team, there are individuals who see opportunities to go above and beyond in their role and duty to serve others – at work and throughout the community. These allies, mentors and leaders are the heart of your fleet; they set a new standard that positively reflects your company’s reputation on and off the road; and they deserve to be recognized by you, their peers, and industry at-large.

John Deere Canada ULC
John Deere has operated its private fleet in Canada for 47 years. It consists of 67 power units and 230 trailers running 11.5 million kilometers in 2023.
The fleet distributes agricultural parts throughout Canada and the United States. They are C-TPAT, CSA, and FAST approved.
The fleet personnel includes 77 employees, and their 72 drivers are supplied by CPC Logistics Canada. As an eleven-time winner of the Private Fleet Safety award, John Deere has demonstrated a strong commitment to safety in its operations.
The company has a written safety policy that is updated annually. Prior experience, education, and reference checks all factor into the hiring process.
Potential new hires for driving positions are preferred to have 3 years of verifiable driving experience, are required to submit current driver and CVOR abstracts, provide a current criminal record check, undergo a pre-employment medical, drug and alcohol screening, and must pass a written and road test.
New hires receive 2 days of in-house training on company procedures, product handling, and safety practices. Drivers are trained and certified on TDG, HOS, and CSA regulations and participate in quarterly safety meetings. John Deere also uses Electronic Logs and utilizes EOBR’s to monitor its driver’s compliance with speed limits & other safe driving practices, & each driver’s performance is monitored with an individual scorecard with comparisons to others in the fleet.
John Deere conducts a full investigation into every incident involving the fleet, including written reports, interviews and remedial training where required.
Monthly supervisory and management safety meetings are held, as well as quarterly driver meetings.
The company also offers a broad-based safety related awards program for the drivers, which includes tracking performance on HOS, fuel consumption, over speed, sudden stops and on time performance, which can result in performance bonuses. This program has been strongly embraced by the drivers and has resulted in significant performance improvements.
All of this effort pays dividends as the John Deere fleet has an incredible CVOR violation rate of only 3.36% and an accident ratio of .17 accidents per million km’s.
Giant Tiger
Giant Tiger has operated its private fleet in Canada for 37 years. Giant Tigers team consists of 256 fleet related employees, of which 205 are drivers. The Fleet consists of 178 Tractors, 4 straight trucks, 3 light commercial vehicles 633 trailers, and operated over 21.4 million km’s in 2023.
Giant Tiger is a Canadian owned discount store that was opened in 1961, and now has over 260 locations and 10,000 team members across Canada, with its fleet in operation since 1987. Each Giant Tiger store is locally owned & actively involved in their community.
Giant Tiger has a safety policy that is reviewed annually, or sooner if new locations open or when operating or legislative changes occur. New drivers must be a minimum of 25 years of age, submit their drivers abstract as well as their commercial vehicle abstract, and have no more than 2 demerit points to be considered for hire. Criminal record and reference checks are also done, as well as a three hour road test that is graded on a tablet using a scoring system. Once hired, each driver goes through a minimum 50 hour on-boarding program, which is extended if the driver trainer feels it is required. Training includes company policy, health & safety, product handling, defensive & fuel efficient driving, WHMIS, HOS, trip inspections, annual winter driving refresher training, sleep management, electric pallet jack, among other topics. Each driver must also pass a self-assessment at the beginning of each shift as per the “Fit for Work policy”. The fleet is equipped with telematics on all trucks that track hours of service, speed, sudden stops and fuel mileage. Carriers Edge modules are used for annual refresher training & supplement biannual in person safety meetings & other regular refresher training as needed or required. Annual ride alongs are also completed with all drivers with Giant Tigers in house trainers.
Giant Tiger provides its staff with regular safety bulletins as needed to provide relevant information, tips & resources to enhance awareness. Drivers are also communicated with through mobile applications, such as email, Microsoft Teams & messaging apps, as well as Geo Tab, to ensure drivers receive relevant information in a safe & timely manner.
All incidents are reviewed by a Joint Health and Safety Committee as well as an incident review team comprised of the hiring manager, safety manager, fleet manager & a senior driver. If an incident is found to be at fault, in class and in cab training is conducted.
The team has a million mile club that showcases all drivers in the club in their lounges across the country, & each driver is supplied with a leather jacket. In addition, drivers receive a bonus for all clean level one, two or three inspections.
Giant Tigers’ level of commitment clearly is getting results, as their accident to incident ratio is .18 accidents per 1 million km’s with a CVOR violation rate of 8.90. This is even more impressive when you consider the fleet has increased its driver count from 20 to over 200 in the last six years.

Eric Robinson, Wellington Group of Companies
Eric joined Wellington in January of 2022, joining his father & brother, who also work at Wellington. Eric’s career in the industry began well before that, however, in January of 2014. His interests were sparked from hearing great things about it from his father. His dad would talk about how he enjoyed the challenges & the many great people he meet through the years working in the industry.
In 2014 Eric volunteered for a logistics company in Mississauga, working for free, so he could learn more about the industry & see if it was one he wanted to enter into to make a career. Eric was booking trucks to cover loads, going to the warehouse to load them, creating paperwork to clear customs, & billing the freight. Eric fell in love with the many different roles, & within 2 weeks was hired to work for the firm.
Over his 10 years to date in the industry, Eric has worked as a Dispatcher , Logistics Account Manager, Logistics Operation Manager, & now is in his current role as a Sr Account Manager with Wellington. Having these different roles, at different companies along the way, has allowed Eric to learn many different skills & roles, as well as learn from some great people along the way. Eric says at Wellington, his has found his “forever” home. Wellington has provided Eric with the ability to advance his career & learn on a daily basis, from some of the industry’s best leaders. Eric has shown his willingness & eagerness to learn, as prior to being awarded this bursary, he had already enrolled in the CITT CCLP program and began his first course in January. Eric has full plans to earn his full CCLP. He is eager to learn even more about the industry & is looking forward to learning more about the different modes & methods through this program.
Wellington indicates that Eric’s thirst for knowledge is evident, & that he took more notes & asked more questions through on boarding than they had seen from most candidates before him. Eric is often one of the first people at the office each day, & always willing to help others, learn & expand. Eric also volunteers at many different community initiatives, such as the Puslinch Santa Clause Parade, fundraiser for sick kids & cancer research, as well as handing out meals for the less fortunate at Christmas. This bursary will help Eric continue learning in the industry to further advance himself, to the benefit of both Wellington & himself. Eric’s future in the industry is bright!

Dave Lalande
Giant Tiger Trucking
Dave joined Giant Tiger in Johnstone, Ontario in 1989 as a store delivery driver, shortly after he obtained his AZ license. Prior to coming to Giant Tiger, Dave began his driving career delivering auto parts with a 5 ton for 2 years with a branch out of Ottawa.
Dave is currently a hybrid driver who helps move Giant Tiger Products both by LCV’s as well as continuing to provide support with store delivery routes.
Dave has a top notch commitment to service & safety, as Dave’s 35 years & over 4.9 million km’s of accident and incident free driving clearly demonstrates.
Dave is also committed to community involvement with Giant Tiger, taking the Tiger Train to numerous community events during the year. When not at work, Dave enjoys spending time with his spouse Teresa of 16 years, being out on his boat & camping, & spending time with his Grandson.
Bob Kestner
Home Hardware Stores Ltd.
Bob grew up on a farm in Bruce County, near the small town of Mildmay, with 2 brothers & 3 sisters. Bob learned to drive tractors & operate farm machinery at an early age, with some of his earliest memories getting up pre down to head out with his dad in his milk truck. Just shy of 18, Bob headed to Toronto to attend college, & graduated in General Business & Business Administration. At that time, trucking was not on Bob’s radar.
After college, Bob returned to Bruce County & took a sales route position with Weston Bakeries, which gave him his introduction to driving, as he filled in for delivery drivers on vacation. After 5 years in Walkerton, Bob transferred to the Kitchener facility, taking on the Kitchener/Stratford territory, & serving on the peer elected driver committee. After Weston, Bob joined Key Brand Foods delivering to restaurants. 23 years ago, Bob left Key Brand and began his journey at Home Hardware.
During Bob’s impeccable safe driving career, covering over 38 years and 4 million km’s of accident free driving, covering Ontario, Quebec & the Maritimes, he has encountered his fare share of unsafe driving & stressful situations. One such encounter occurred in Northern, Ontario. During stormy conditions, he was forced to the shoulder to avoid a head on collision with an oncoming Tractor Trailer. The driver continued driving in an unsafe manner & shortly after crashed into another transport truck, leading in the fatality of the other driver. Bob came forward as a witness, & testified at trial, & was able to help ensure the driver who caused the fatality was held accountable & was able to meet the family of the victim. Bob also witnessed a car flip upside down into the ditch during a heavy rainstorm on Highway 400. Bob pulled over, called 911, and was able to wait with the girl, who thankfully was not injured, until help arrived.
Bob is married to his wife Karen of 38 years and is the proud father of a son & daughter, and grandpa to a grandson. In his free time, Bob likes to travel, spend time with family, visiting his trailer in Goderich, riding his motorcycle & taking on home projects.

PMTC ANNOUNCES RECEIPIENT OF THE 2024 RICK AUSTIN MEMORIAL DISPATCHER AWARD
The PMTC and CPC Logistics Canada announced the recipient of The Rick Austin Memorial Dispatcher of the Year Award on June 19th as part of the PMTC’s 2024 Annual Conference in Niagara Falls, On. This award was established in 2018 to honor the memory of one of CPC’s Fleet Dispatchers, Rick Austin, who passed away suddenly on March 15th of 2017.
Rick began his career in the Transportation Industry right out of high school, starting with a dry wall company loading, tarping and strapping trucks. Rick joined the John Deere Canadian Fleet on November 25, 1991, and quickly developed a reputation as a dependable driver with a great work ethic. Rick earned his Million Mile Award and started to train to provide relief dispatch, and then moved into the full-time dispatch role in 2000. Rick received the CPC Logistics President’s Award in recognition of his exceptional loyalty, service and dedication.
Because of his years on the road, Rick fully understood the demands and strains on a long-haul driver, and became not just a Dispatcher, but a good friend and wise council to many drivers over the years. Rick always took the time to communicate with the drivers and tried to make sure that they kept life in balance.
This award is designed to help recognize the exceptional and often under-appreciated efforts of Dispatchers who have made an outstanding contribution to their company over their career.
The 2024 Rick Austin Memorial Dispatcher of the year award went to Carrie Scarselli of John Deere Canada ULC.
Information and background for Carrie.
Carrie began her career at John Deere 6 years ago, being hired to fill the role that was left vacant as a result of Rick’s tragic passing. Carrie had a daunting task in front of her.
Carrie started her career in Transportation at the age of 20, working for Apex Driving School answering calls & performing bookkeeping duties. From there, Carrie worked for a Customs Broker for 6 years, which lead her to work as a Safety Coordinator for a floral distributor. From that position, Carrie was introduced to other branches of shipping, receiving, dispatching as well as warehousing. Carrie eventually began working for a Transportation Company as a Safety Coordinator. This was Carrie’s final steppingstone before coming to CPC to manage the John Deere Fleet. Carrie was recommended to us by a previous employer to Charlie Shields, John Deere’s former safety manager. Her previous employer told us that Carrie just had a way with people, would work shoulder to shoulder with drivers & always meshed well with a team.
When Carrie started, she quickly learned who all the drivers were, found common ground, & within months was a full-fledged teammate.
Carrie is always available to the office staff & drivers, ensuring she is available for support whether it is early in the morning or late into the evening. She always takes the time to listen, & has been instrumental in modernizing our processes, eliminating unnecessary paperwork for drivers as well as the shipping office.
Carrie is a cheerleader for the teams safety goals, believing & communicating that perfection, or at least near perfection, is possible, & has an open door policy with everyone. There is genuine respect between Carrie & the team. A true testament to the respect Carrie has earned is the 30 drivers who took time to provide testimonials for her application, with over 20 of them taking the time to insert meaningful comments supporting her submission & laying out the reasons why. There are too many testimonials to read them all, however the main themes from the drivers testimonials were, Carries takes the time to listen, genuinely cares about their wellbeing & that of the company, is there to answer questions whenever it is needed, always there for them, goes above & beyond what her role requires. The respect that goes both ways between Carrie & the team is evident in the testimonials. Carrie is a very deserving recipient of this year’s award.

The Feds, Provinces & Territories Must Work Together to effectively Monitor Carrier Safety Fitness
The System in place currently has been broken for a long time, and solutions offered by Industry have yet to be acted upon
(the below is an exert of a communication that was sent by the PMTC to the CCMTA, Transport Canada & The Council of Ministers Responsible for Transportation)
Currently Commercial Motor Carriers who wish to operate a trucking fleet in Canada must apply for a Safety Fitness Certificate to the Provincial Authority in which they plan to licence their vehicles. If the Provincial Authority of the base jurisdiction approves the application, a National Safety Code (NSC) will be issued to the Carrier. The base jurisdiction is then responsible for monitoring the motor carrier for safety and compliance, based on National Safety Code 14, which is a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) all jurisdictions agreed to several years back. https://www.ccmta.ca/en/national-safety-code
The system in place has been broken for a long time, and solutions offered by Industry have yet to be acted upon (the below is an exert of communication that the PMTC sent to the CCMTA, Transport Canada, and The Council of Ministers Responsible for Transportation).

PMTC & CPC LOGISTICS CANADA ANNOUNCES RECEIPIENT OF THE 2023 RICK AUSTIN MEMORIAL DISPATCHER OF THE YEAR AWARD
The PMTC and CPC Logistics Canada announced the recipient of The Rick Austin Memorial Dispatcher of the Year Award on June 22nd as part of the PMTC’s 2023 Annual Conference.
Rick decided to move behind the wheel and would eventually become an owner operator. Rick joined the John Deere Canadian Fleet on November 25, 1991 and quickly developed a reputation as a dependable driver with a great work ethic. Rick earned his Million Mile Award and started to train to provide relief dispatch, and then moved into the full-time dispatch role in 2000.
For a time, Rick dispatched all units in both Grimsby and Regina. As the fleet grew and it was discovered the kind of effort that Rick was dedicating to his role, the Dispatch office was expanded, and Rick received the CPC Logistics President’s Award in recognition of his exceptional loyalty, service and dedication.
Because of his years on the road, Rick fully understood the demands and strains on a long-haul driver, and became not just a Dispatcher, but a good friend and wise council to many drivers over the years. Rick understood that the job needed to be done, but also wanted the drivers running safe and legal at all times. Whether he had the time or not, he always took the time to communicate with the drivers and tried to make sure that they kept life in balance.
This award is designed to help recognize the exceptional and often under-appreciated efforts of Dispatchers who have made an outstanding contribution to their company over their career.
The 2023 Rick Austin Memorial Dispatcher of the year award went to Wallace Green of Gray Ridge Eggs.
Information and Background for Wallace
In October of 1977 Wally got a call from the then plant manager of Gray Ridge Eggs asking if he could come in and take over Shipping. He started on November 21st, 1977. In the small town of Strathroy – many people knew Wally for being a get’r done guy, who would work till the job was done. Someone you wanted in your company. He had worked at Gray Ridge part time in the summer. Now he worked alongside the owner, Bill Gray, building the business. He quickly became the go to guy for where the eggs go and come from. Back then, it was nothing to stay overnight on a couch waiting for the eggs to come in.
Wally got his AZ license shortly after that and found he had a talent for knowing how the routes would go together efficiently or which driver would suit a customer best. Problem solving and communication was the only way to make this work. Wally called the driver on the phone, and he made time to talk face to face with the driver, by waiting till they got back.
As a driver, Wally was aware of the issues a driver faces and the safety measures that must be taken. Wally believes in the values of Gray Ridge and making sure all drivers come home to their families every night.
Wally never let a driver do something he wouldn’t do, and he would run the routes to make sure it was workable and safe. To this day his memory rivals anyone. He ran trucks, drivers, and made sure production could make enough product to satisfy the needs of shipping – which he was running too, since he was asked in1986 to take on the additional role of plant manager.
Many a night a driver would call Wally for issues that came up – no portable on-call phone back then! One early morning adventure had Wally taking off from home at 3 am to rescue a driver at Putnam where he had had a breakdown and was very stranded and cold. Once he got him back to Strathroy off the driver went again to deliver the eggs and Wally stayed to start his day.
Wally has been married to Dollie for the past 48 years and have raised 3 successful boys with 4 grandkids. Born in Bath, New Brunswick and moved to Ontario when he was 5. Growing up on a farm prepared him for the work ethic he has shown his entire career.
Every night before he goes home every driver is called and given his route, Wally answers any questions and makes sure the driver has all the info he needs to be successful the next day. He has done this for 40 years. It is appreciated by drivers more now that it is a real person to talk to and not just a text.
Wally navigated the transportation division of Gray Ridge Eggs from 4 trucks when he started, to two terminals, Strathroy and Listowel, and 46 trucks. He kept his drivers due to who he is, some have been with him for 35 years. That kind of loyalty is earned. He runs a tight ship and works towards efficiency with assets and understanding for the rules of the road. Safety for him is a major factor. We have not had a catastrophic accident and if you review the CVOR you will see that the rating is consistently excellent. Wally has a hand in that too.
Being a great dispatcher is not reflected in a day or even a year but his lifetime career is proof that Wally is truly deserving of being recognized and honoured as the Rick Austin Memorial Dispatcher of the year.

The Private Motor Truck Council of Canada and CPC Logistics Canada are pleased to induct these four professionals into the Hall of Fame for Professional Drivers.
Yves Bélanger
Linde Canada Inc.
Yves has had a passion for trucks from an early age, being exposed to the industry as a result of his father being an owner operator. Yves spent many days in the summer getting up early so he could ride with his dad hauling lumber across his home province of Quebec. After high school Yves completed a diploma in Heavy duty mechanics. He quickly realized his true passion was trucking however and went for his class 1 license in 1989, as soon as he was old enough to obtain it.
For the next 7 years Yves hauled lumber throughout the Province of Quebec. Between 96 and 2001 Yves went to work for an aluminum smelter in Northeast Quebec, driving trucks only occasionally. In 2001 Yves returned to his passion of trucking fulltime, while at the same time Yves earned a diploma in truck transportation. During this time, he began hauling bulk & liquid dangerous goods across Canada and into the US. The company Yves was working for at the time thought he would make a perfect driver trainer, and his career expanded into promoting safety and compliance to newcomers to the industry.
Yves joined Linde Canada in 2008 as a highway driver, hauling liquid carbon dioxide and cryogenic liquid tanker trailers. While this job took Yves away from his wife Isabelle and their 2 young children each week, Yves still found time to be involved in the community, managing his young sons’ hockey team with the help and support of Isabelle. Yves work with Linde took him into the US, and across Canada, as far away as Labrador City and James Bay, hauling super b trains in all seasons.
Yves has been a full time professional driver for 30 years since 1989, spanning over 4.8million accident and incident free driving.

Alvin “Al” was raised on a dairy farm near Milverton, Ontario. When he was young he enjoyed working the fields and dabbled in welding for a while in his Uncle’s fabricating shop, later working for a local tilling company. When his Uncle purchased a livestock hauling business, Alvin was keen to get on the road, and begin hauling cattle and pigs around Ontario in straight trucks. When the company was purchased by a larger organization, Al had the opportunity to move up to tractor trailers, continuing to haul livestock, while also hauling fertilizer out of Ohio, and dump trailer to grain ports around Ontario.
In 1988 Al noticed an ad in a local paper and filled out a job application, which lead to a job interview and road test. In February 1988 Al began his career with Home Hardware Stores. The first week stands out in Alvin’s mind, as it was hard work unloading the trailers at the stores, as the hardware didn’t walk itself off the trailer!! After 3 days Alvin said he was second guessing his decision, but in time he found his groove and has never looked back.
During his time with Home Hardware, Al enjoyed getting to know the store owners, dispatchers, and other co-workers, making many lifelong friends. He enjoyed the open road he travelled between Winnipeg and Nova Scotia, and also served on Home Hardware’s Accident Review Committee as well as the Health and Safety Committee.
Over the years Al has witnessed many serious accidents. Just over 2 years ago, as he approached a rural corner, he noticed a transformer flash ahead. A truck went through a stop sign and collided with another vehicle, throwing a driver clear from his vehicle, and seriously injuring him. Al called 911 and the dispatcher coached Al on how to keep the injured elderly man calm while they waited for Ornge air and other 1st responders to arrive.
Al is married to his wife Kara of 42 years and is the proud father of two daughters and grandfather to twin grandchildren. He enjoys puttering around his 9 acre farm and woodworking. He has served in many capacities at the Listowel, Poole and Wellesley Mennonite Church’s. He has supported his wife’s pastoral roles in various congregations and enjoyed working with Youth. He also went on a weeklong mission to West Virginia rebuilding and repairing homes.
In December of 2022, after almost 35 years at Home Hardware, Al retired. Al’s driving career spanned over 40 years of accident and incident free driving, spanning over 4 million km’s.
Dwayne Saik
Linde Canada Inc.
Dwayne was around 10 years old when his father taught him to drive a Massey 30 farm tractor on the family farm in Alberta. The old Massey is what motivated Dwayne to choose trucking as a career. In 1977 he obtained his commercial license and began his career with SH Concrete hauling Gravel & sand throughout the Edmonton area for the next 5 years. From 82 until 93 Dwayne worked for several other carriers where he hauled several different types of goods across Canada and the US, logging more than 2 million km’s.
In 1993, Dwayne joined Linde Canada Inc, formerly known as Praxair. He quickly realized that handling and hauling cryogenic liquids & other specialty gases was what he wanted to do for the rest of his career. Dwayne is highly respected by his peers and is the 2nd most senior driver in the West Region for Linde’s Bulk Division. He hauled Hydrogen in his early days with Linde, and also hauled propylene across North America. Dwayne has also made over 2500 deliveries to Fort McMurray in the last 20 years. In 2005 Dwayne received Linde’s million mile award.
Dwayne will tell you that what has kept him at Linde all these years is their commitment to safety, which involves providing drivers with the most up to date safety technology, as well as their emphasis on safety training and operational discipline. Dwayne tells drivers “you either fit the job at Linde or you don’t, there is no in-between” If you stay disciplined, follow procedures and follow your safety training, you will be successful, if you don’t you will get in trouble. Dwayne is also know for his handwriting being the most legible and clear handwriting in the fleet, he says “These are legal documents, you must be clear, and the recipient of these documents must know you take all tasks seriously”
In his personal life, Dwayne has 2 daughters, Jaclyn and Britney, whom he still takes camping in the US Mountains with his 40ft 5th wheel trailer. Dwyane also spends time with his 98 year old father and takes time to operate the tractor around the farm. Dwayne has a total of over 45 years and 4.5million km’s of accident and incident free driving.
Grant Taylor
Wellington Group of Companies
Grant began his unofficial driving career 49 years ago when he was 15. He worked at a dairy in Toronto with his grandfather. One day, his grandpa tossed him the keys of a spare truck and told him to go learn to drive it. It was a 24-foot tandem axel, five-speed, reefer unit. Grant spent two days in the yard learning how to maneuver it.
He got a job shunting trucks in the yard, and Grant says that is how he got hooked on truck driving.
At 19 he bought a straight truck and became an owner-operator. He later sold the vehicle and worked for a courier company for a couple of years.
He transitioned into driving concrete mixers, a job he did for 20 years.
The job had great pay, but long hours, many times you would be gone before the sun came up and come home long after the sun went down. His wife at the time stayed home and looked after the kids. He drove snowplows during winter when the concrete business was slow.
Personal problems crept in. Drinking problems contributed to the demise of his marriage. He suffered a work-related accident, the only one of his career, when another motorist blew through a stop sign. The incident messed up his head and damaged his right knee. The joint had to be replaced. Twice.
He had to give up driving concrete mixers for awhile.
Grant had three children. He is very proud of his daughters, one who transports patients and the other is a paralegal. His son has unfortunately passed and is missed early.
Taylor is passionate about helping others. At the age of 50, he graduated with a diploma in the study of addiction from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ont. Grant is a sponsor for alcoholics, and when he retires, he plans to open a pro bono office to provide counsel to alcoholics.
Grant and his wife have just completed renovations to their house so his wife’s elderly parents can move in with them. Grant participates in all of Wellington’s company fundraising events, and volunteers for the Santa Clause Parade. Grant cares about his fellow workers and has called in before when he feels a driver is being overworked. Grant, who has worked for Wellington for the past 4 years, was named the Wellington Driver of the Year in 2022. Over Grants career he has operated 46 years and over 4 million km’s of at fault accident-free driving.

PMTC & Tenstreet Announce Recipients of the 2023 Young Leaders Education Bursary
The Private Motor Truck Council of Canada, along with the sponsor of the YLG Bursary awards, Tenstreet & The PMTC Young Leaders Group, were pleased to present 2 deserving individuals with the 2023 “PMTC Young Leaders Group Education Bursary” at its Annual General Meeting & Conference in Hamilton, Ontario. This year marked a slight change in who the awards were presented to as well. For the 2nd straight year 1 bursary was available to PMTC Members companies, while the other bursary was made available to students in Mohawk College’s Supply Chain Management Program.
Through a partnership developed in 2022, up to 5 students in the Mohawk program are provided a 1-year free YLG PMTC Membership. Each one of these students is assigned a mentor from PMTC’s Young Leaders Group and are taken to industry events to be introduced to the industry, make connections, and make for an easier transition into the field. 3 students are with us here today, and one of them was awarded a bursary.
Both awards were presented by PMTC’s YLG Chairperson, Leanne Drummond.
“These awards present emerging young leaders with the funds to take 2 of the 4 courses required to complete the PMTC Logistics Management Graduate Program,” stated PMTC President Mike Millian. “These courses are offered through CITT, a leader in Transportation Logistics training. When completed, this will arm these individuals with the skills and confidence necessary to climb the ranks in their organisation and help them become a successful Leader. We also believe this award will help promote investment in the training needs of our future leaders.”
The 2023 recipients are Udomsinachi Obioma from Mohawk College and Nick Subramaniam from Wellington Group of Companies
Udomsinachi Obioma, Mohawk College
Udomsinachi is an international student from Nigeria who has worked hard to maintain a high academic standing, earning an overall average of 92% in his final semester. He is passionate about supply chain management and the impact that it has on businesses and society. Throughout his studies, he has gained a deep understanding of the complexities of supply chain management and has been inspired by the ways in which companies can optimize their operations to create value for their customers. He believes that this field has the potential to drive economic growth and create lasting social impact, and Udomsinachi is committed to pursuing a career in this area. However, as a college student, he has faced financial challenges that have made it difficult for him to fully engage in his studies. Despite his academic success, he has also had to work part-time jobs to support myself, which he feels has limited his ability to participate in extracurricular activities and attend networking events. Despite this concern that he expresses of himself, his teacher at Mohawk indicates he is reliable, always attends classes, is always on time, and his assignments and quizzes are completed on time, and he has made the deans’ list, showing a true commitment.
Udomsinachi indicates that the PMTC Young Leaders Education Bursary will provide him with the opportunity to advance his education further by enrolling in supply chain certification courses with reputable institutions such as CITT. He feels these courses will enable him to gain specialized knowledge and skills that are highly valued in the industry and would help him stand out in a competitive job market and are courses that he otherwise would not be able to afford. By investing in his education through certification courses, he will be better equipped to make meaningful contributions to the field of supply chain management and create a lasting impact. Furthermore, Udomsinachi is also committed to giving back to his community. Prior to arriving in Canada, he volunteered his time and expertise as a mentor to young adolescents living with HIV where he coached them on life skills and helped them to develop a resilient mindset required to deal with the stigma associated with living with HIV. When he arrived to Canada, he registered to volunteer as a member of the Mohawk Green Team, showing his commitment to use his skills and knowledge to help others, which he plans to continue doing going forward.
Nick Subramaniam, Wellington Group of Companies
Nick joined Wellington in April of 2021. He was fresh out of school and looking for a place to set his roots. Nick joined Wellington in the capacity of a tracker & tracer and excelled in his role for the 5 months that he held it. He was eager to learn and advance in his career and was promoted to the role of Jr Account Manager in operations. Nick excelled there as well, and jumped at the chance to expand his knowledge and responsibilities even further, and was recently promoted to US operations manager, becoming the youngest person in the history of Wellington to achieve such a status. In this role he has led his team to much growth and success, and Wellington expects his progression to continue. Managers meet weekly with Wellington’s company President to discuss succession planning, and Wellington staff says it is obvious to them that Nick will one day become a director at the company. His manager states his intelligence and work ethic are strong, and his thirst for expanded knowledge and improvement is impressive. His manager also states he has hired over 50 people to work in the office at Wellington and feels without a doubt Nick has progressed the farthest in the shortest period of time.
For his part, Nick says he has a passion for this industry, and wants to learn as much as he can. Nick feels the bursary will allow him to expand his knowledge of theoretical components of the industry and feels he can use this knowledge to help elevate Wellington’s status even further to one of the biggest and best known companies, even further than their already well known and respected status. Nick wants to be part of Wellington for a long time, and feels this opportunity will help him become and even better employee to help Wellington and the Industry as a whole.

PMTC & KRTS announce recipient of the Professional CMV Driver Training Scholarship
The Private Motor Truck Council of Canada, along with sponsor KRTS, announced the recipient of the Professional Commercial Motor Vehicle Driver Training Scholarship at its Annual General Meeting & Conference in Hamilton, Ontario on June 22nd, 2023.
“The skill and professionalism that is required of today’s professional drivers is increasing with each passing year,” stated PMTC President Mike Millian. “For an entry level driver entering our industry to have the best chance possible to be successful, it is imperative that they receive the best in class training that is available. This scholarship, which provides training that is TTSAO certified & MELT approved, provides just that. We are thankful to KRTS for sponsoring this award and making this scholarship possible.”
To be eligible to receive this award, applicants must be employed by, or be a relative of a current PMTC member. They must have no more than 3 points listed against their Motor Vehicle Driving record. They must have no impaired, dangerous, careless, or similar driving convictions in the past 3 years. Must have no criminal code convictions or must have received a pardon or a waiver. The applicants must also have a conditional job offer as a professional driver, or a related field, pending successful completion of the Training Program. The applicant also had to be nominated by his or her employer, had to submit a resume and a 650 to 1000-word essay stating why they thought they were a good candidate for the scholarship and what their personal goals within the Transportation Industry are.
The 2023 recipient is Max Sundquist of Lincoln, On, employed by Spring Creek Carriers.
Max’s introduction to the trucking industry began when he was 5 years old, the first time his dad took him on a trip. Max’s dad has been a long-haul driver for over 30 years. Until Max began working for Spring Creek in 2020 however, as a dispatcher, he had not really envisioned a career in the transportation industry. Now that he has been in it for the last 3 years, he loves it. Max indicates he loves being part of such an amazing industry and playing a role in such an important industry to the economy and supplying people’s daily basic needs.
Max is passionate about the industry and wants to expand his knowledge of the daily struggles that a driver goes through, which is of central importance to his role as a dispatcher. Max feels going through Entry level Training at a quality certified school such as KRTS will help increase his knowledge and understanding of some of what a driver has to deal with.
In nominating Max, his employer Spring Creek Carriers, stressed that Max has an eagerness to learn, and an ability to quickly apprehend and understand challenges, and make suggestions for improvement. Max was hired in May of 2020, with the interview process beginning in April. This was just as Covid was in it’s infancy, and most places were in a flux, laying people off as opposed to hiring new. Despite this concern, Spring Creek saw enough through the 4 interviews they conducted to take a chance on Max. Max was hired in the Customer Service Relations department. Max quickly grasped the TMS & offered suggestions on how to improve it. He quickly began to understand Spring Creek’s model of LTL, and also how important it was to support the drivers. Max has been promoted to a junior role in outbound dispatch. In his new role Max has continued to ask questions, seek out guidance and improve in his role.
Whether Max stay’s in a role in dispatch, moves into the safety and compliance field, or becomes a driver down the road, he believes this Commercial Driver Training Scholarship will increase his knowledge and help him be an improved employee for Spring Creek and the Industry, and Spring Creek has committed to continue to support him in his career at their organization.
Please join me in congratulating Max Sundquist for receiving the PMTC-KRTS 2023 Commercial Motor Vehicle Driver Training Scholarship.
PMTC & KRTS both congratulate Max on receiving this much deserved training scholarship.

John Deere Canada ULC
John Deere has operated its private fleet in Canada for 46 years. It consists of 64 power units and 295 trailers running 11.2 million kilometers in 2022.
The fleet distributes agricultural parts throughout Canada and the United States. It is C-TPAT, CSA, and FAST approved.
The fleet personnel includes 76 employees, and their drivers are supplied by CPC Logistics Canada. As a ten-time winner of the Private Fleet Safety award, John Deere has demonstrated a strong commitment to safety in its operations.
The company has a written safety policy that is updated annually. Prior experience, education, and reference checks all factor into the hiring process.
Potential new-hires for driving positions are preferred to have 3 years of verifiable driving experience, are required to submit current driver and CVOR abstracts, undergo a pre-employment medical, drug and alcohol screening, and must pass a written and road test.
New hires receive 2 days of in-house training on company procedures, product handling, and safety practices. Drivers are trained and certified on TDG, HOS, and CSA regulations and participate in quarterly safety meetings. John Deere also uses Electronic Logs, and utilizes EOBR’s to monitor its driver’s compliance with speed limits.
John Deere conducts a full investigation into every incident involving the fleet, including written reports, interviews and remedial training where required.
Monthly supervisory and management safety meetings are held, and quarterly driver meetings.
The company also offers a broad-based safety related awards program for the drivers, which includes tracking performance on HOS, fuel consumption, over speed, sudden stops and on time performance, which can result in performance bonuses. This program has been strongly embraced by the drivers and has resulted in significant performance improvements.
All of this effort pays dividends as the John Deere fleet has an incredible CVOR violation rate of only 2.11% and an accident ration of 2.3 per million km’s.
Home Hardware Stores Ltd.
Home Hardware has operated one of the most visible private fleets in Canada for over 58 years. Home Hardware consists of 176 fleet related personnel; drivers, dispatch and technicians. The fleet consists of 148 tractors, 605 trailers, and 2 straight trucks, and in the current year they operated 20.8 million kilometers.
Selection of new drivers for Home Hardware is a rigorous process that consists of a review of their application, current driver and CVOR Abstracts and previous employment history. This is followed up by 2 interviews, as well as reference checks prior to a road test. Newly hired drivers receive a week of in-person and online orientation and training, dock training, and time accompanied by a driver coach.
If the new hire has less than 3-years’ experience, they will be placed with a driver coach for a period of up to 6 weeks, and must have gone through an approved Entry Level Training Course. Although drivers are continuously monitored throughtout the probation period, a formal performance review is undertaken with all new drivers after 3 months. Providing performances are acceptable, the driver may then offered full time employment.
All accidents or incidents are reported immediately and reviewed by a direct supervisor and the safety and compliance manager. GPS tracking, Elogs, statements, dashcam video and pictures are reviewed and an interview is conducted with the driver. Annually, all accidents are reviewed by an accident review committee, consisting of management members and a committee of drivers, elected by their peers. The committee will make a determination on preventability and on the driver’s eligibility for the companies’ safe driving awards, safe driving bonus program and a profit-sharing bonus program.
Home Hardware encourages its team members to participate in the Regional and Provincial Truck Driving Championships and has been named one of Canada’s Top Fleet Employers by Trucking HR Canada 10 straight years.
Home Hardware currently has an impressive CVOR violation rate of 7.03%. As a 10-time winner of the PMTC Fleet Safety Awards, Home Hardware continues to stand the test of time.

Natural Resources Canada has introduced an online hub that links to insights about zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs), pulling together content that to date has been spread across various government websites.
Information accessed through the central site includes details that range from charging basics, to the $200,000 available through the federal Incentives for Medium- and Heavy-Duty Zero-Emission Vehicles Program, and enhanced first-year capital cost allowances on eligible ZEVs.
General guidance relating to commercial vehicles references things like the need to benchmark daily vehicle use against operational needs, establish infrastructure plans, and engaging employees and senior managers early in the decision-making process.

Ontario proposing changes to the air brake license renewal process and knowledge test requirements.
Recently the Ontario Ministry of Transportations posted a proposal to amend the process of a driver renewing their Z endorsement for air brakes on their Ontario driver’s license.
The current process requires a driver to attend a Drive Test Center prior to their license expiring, and then write and pass a knowledge test in order to maintain the Z endorsement on their driver’s license. The process is the same for those who have a commercial license class, such as a Class A or D, among others. The knowledge test allows drivers to demonstrate they have the basic knowledge required to operate and inspect a commercial motor vehicle and its air brake system.
Commercial drivers’ knowledge of the air brake system and inspecting its parts and operation continue to be an issue in Ontario and all of Canada. In 2022, stats released by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance highlight the need for improved air brake knowledge. In their road check blitz in 2022, 48,966 level 1 and 2 inspections were completed in Canada and the US combined. 22.8% of vehicles were taken out of service for defects. Of the vehicles taken out of service, vehicles inspected in the USA, 36.9% had defects in the braking systems. In Canada, the numbers were even worse, with 48.4% of vehicles taken out of service having brake defects. This by far represented the highest percentage of defects found, and this continues to be the case year after year. These numbers indicate a major issue with maintenance and failure of the air brake system as well as inspections being conducted prior to the beginning of a day’s work.
While these numbers indicate we need to change the way things are currently being done, the PMTC believes removing the knowledge test is a step that should not be taken, and in fact has the real opportunity of reducing drivers’ knowledge of the air brake system and reducing safety on our roadways. The PMTC has no issue with the learning modules and believe this is a good opportunity to increase a drivers’ knowledge of the air brake system, the concern we have is removing the knowledge verification. Allowing a driver to complete learning modules at home, with no other checkpoints or verification in place is opening up a real opportunity for fraud. How will you verify the person doing the module is in fact the license holder? How can you verify that they are reviewing the information and taking the knowledge in, and not just going through the motions and advancing through the program? No matter what type of secure online system you have in place, their will be no fool proof way to ensure the person required to take the modules is in fact the correct person, short of having a staff member sitting online with the person and verifying the person on the screen is in fact the license holder. The only true way to verify the license holder has the minimum knowledge required is to have them attend a Drive Test Center and perform the knowledge test in person. Adding the knowledge modules is a good step, but that step should not come along with a removal of the knowledge verification process if we expect it to improve safety.
As for the Ministries argument that this is removing a barrier, that does not really hold water. The driver is still going to be required to go to Drive Test to renew their license and do the written test if they have any other commercial class of license. The only burden this is removing is the requirement of the driver to pass the Z knowledge test. With many of our members holding all classes of commercial licenses, we feel if you are unable to pass the basic requirements of a knowledge test, we really don’t believe you should be on our highways as you do not have the basic knowledge required to inspect and operate a vehicle with an air brake system.
The PMTC is encouraging the province to reconsider this proposal, and we encourage you to comment on the regulatory posting to ensure your views are heard as well. The posting can be asked through the link below and is open for comments until March 16th.

OTTAWA, ON (February 9, 2023) – Today Trucking HR Canada (THRC) introduces a new addition to their Career ExpressWay Program. Thanks to funding from the Government of Canada under the Sectoral Workforce Solutions Program (SWSP), the trucking industry will look to recruit and onboard up to 2600 new workers in both driving and non-driving roles.
This new injection of funding will provide up to $10,000 to cover the cost of entry-level driver training for those looking to enter the occupation, along with a wage incentive of the same amount to support employers with onboarding, mentoring, and finishing training. Wage incentives are also available for new hires in other in-demand positions.
“Without truckers, groceries wouldn’t make it to the shelves of our local supermarkets and builders wouldn’t get the supplies they need. We’re investing in Trucking HR to make sure the industry can support truckers and the workers who help them by equipping them with the training and skills they need to meet the demand we know is there.” Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Disability Inclusion, Carla Qualtrough
“The trucking and logistics sector supports every key economic sector and is critical to Canadian economic recovery.” Says Angela Splinter, CEO, Trucking HR Canada. “Expanding and building on the success of THRC’s Career ExpressWay program was a specific recommendation in the National Supply Chain Task Force Report, and we are proud to see this important investment that will directly support industry employers in addressing labour shortages with the hardest to fill roles, while also connecting and preparing Canadians for well-paying jobs in our sector.”
This new project, made possible through a coalition of partners, will also include the development and piloting of a national occupational-level training standard. Building on THRC’s current national occupational standard for commercial drivers, this part of the project looks to build national consistency in training, support increased productivity, and bridge the gap between entry-level training and road readiness.
The new project also supports the updating of THRC’s highly regarded labour market information work - including updating our demographic data to include Census 2021 data, conducting a new employer survey, and providing a new labour market supply and demand forecast up to 2028.
Trucking HR Canada was awarded just over 46 million in funding.
The industry coalition of partners includes the Canadian Trucking Alliance, the British Columbia Trucking Association, the Alberta Motor Transport Association, the Saskatchewan Trucking Association, Manitoba Trucking Association, Ontario Trucking Association, Association du camionnage du Quebec, Atlantic Provinces Trucking Association, the Insurance Bureau of Canada, The Private Motor Truck Council of Canada, Supply Chain Canada, cross-sectoral partners and more.
First announced in Budget 2021, the SWSP helps key sectors of the economy implement solutions to address their current and emerging workforce needs by funding organizations to deliver projects that focus on a range of industry-driven activities. These include training and reskilling workers, helping employers retain and attract a skilled and diverse workforce and other creative solutions to help sectors address labour market needs. It will also support equity-deserving groups by promoting a diverse and inclusive workforce and providing wrap-around supports as needed to those facing barriers to participation. Trucking HR Canada was part of a pre-approved list of organizations invited for a priority application process.

We collaborate, partner, and work with a dynamic network including industry associations, government departments and industry professionals to ensure Canada’s freight transportation network has the skilled workforce needed for today and into the future.

Milton, ON:
The Private Motor Truck Council of Canada and Benchmark Sponsor, Ontario Truck Driving School, have announced that the 7th annual PMTC Canadian Private Fleet benchmarking survey instrument is live as of today, February 6th. This study is open for completion by all Private Fleets which have a base of operations in Canada. PMTC Membership is not a requirement.
“For the last 6 years the PMTC has partnered with the National Private Truck Council and re-introduced the first Canadian specific private benchmarking survey reports since 2011” remarked PMTC President Mike Millian. “The response to these surveys and the quality of the Benchmarking report produced have been gratifying and provide a valuable tool and resource to our membership. As a result, we are once again partnering with the NPTC for the 2023 Survey. The NPTC has been producing a private fleet benchmark survey in the USA annually since 2005, and by partnering with them again, the PMTC feels it is guaranteeing another quality and highly respected report for our members”
The PMTC has a benchmarking committee, made up of Canadian operators who review the survey annually. The committee works on shaping the survey and updating it to ensure it is reflective of the current Canadian marketplace. This input is invaluable in ensuring the survey instrument is current, relevant, and valuable to Canadian fleets.
The survey is designed for the benefit of PMTC members, and its results will only be provided, at no charge, with their PMTC membership. The survey is yet another value add that will allow private fleets to benchmark their operations to other best-in class performers. A performance evaluation/ validation and opportunity identification guide based on industry standards of excellence. This free value to our members would not be possible without the support of our Sponsor for 2023, Ontario Truck Driving School. “We are thrilled that OTDS has choose to partner with the PMTC and its members and has chosen to invest in sponsoring this survey for a 4th consecutive year! This sponsorship helps to cover the costs of the report, which allows the PMTC to provide this report free to its membership.”, continued Millian
“As a Registered Private Career College, who prides ourselves on maintaining the highest education standards resulting in the best "in class" entry level drivers to the Trucking Industry, we at OTDS feel sponsoring a survey that allows fleets to compare best practices and bench mark their operations to help them be best in class at what they do, was a natural fit. We are proud to help the PMTC make this resource available to its members” stated OTDS President and CEO Gus Rahim
Discounted Membership fee for the first 25 fleets to complete the survey in full!
New this year, to encourage even more fleets to complete the Benchmarking Survey, the PMTC will discount your PMTC Membership by 10% if you are one of the first 25 fleets to complete the survey in full. If a current member, the discount will be provided on your renewal date, if a brand-new member, the discount will be applied when you apply to be a member. To receive the discount, the survey must be completed in its entirety.
To complete the survey, please click on the link provided below. Carriers will have until April 30th to complete and submit their responses. The PMTC Benchmark Study can also be found on the PMTC website at www.pmtc.ca under the Publications Tab.

January 23/2023
Today the Province of Quebec has published it’s ELD regulations, that will make ELD’s required for Provincially Regulated Carriers as of April 30th of this year. While the PMTC is in full support of ELD’s and are in favour of full enforcement for federally regulated carriers, as plenty of notice was provided to comply, an announcement by Quebec with a timeline of slightly over 3 months to comply for Provincially regulated carriers is concerning to our Quebec members who are Provincially regulated only. Our office will be reaching out to express our concern and encourage a slightly longer runway for Industry. Please see below for the link to the full announcement.
QUEBEC CITY , Jan. 23, 2023 /CNW Telbec/ - The Deputy Premier and Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Ms. Geneviève Guilbault, in collaboration with the Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ), announces that From April 30, the electronic logging device (ECD) will be mandatory. PMTC Recommendations to the National Supply Chain Task Force
The Private Motor Truck Council of Canada welcomes the opportunity to work with the National Supply Chain Task Force and is thankful for the partnership and chance to work together to make Canada’s supply chain stronger. The PMTC is the only National Canadian Association dedicated to representing the views and interest of Canada’s Private & Dedicated Fleets. This part of the Canadian Trucking Industry represents roughly 50% of the class 8 trucks on Canada’s highways today, and over 70% of Canada’s smaller urban deliver vehicles (class 7 and below). We feel it is important that this unique portion of the industry is represented on the task force with their perspectives.
The pandemic, along with recent severe weather events, such as the floods and wildfires in BC, show not only how critical our supply chain is, but also how fragile. The nations critical needs rely on the men and women who work in the supply chain, as well as the infrastructure that is required to efficiently move the freight and supply the services that are required for our daily lives. Canada is one of the greatest nations in the world and must move forward with supply chain efficiencies and improvements that are warranted for the G7 country that we are.
The PMTC & its members have highlighted a number of area’s to the Task Force that we feel will help improve the countries supply chain.
The PMTC looks forward to working with the task force and looks forward to further discussion and consultations as we move forward.

PMTC’s position on CCMTA Federal ELD Enforcement Timelines Announcement
Earlier today the CCMTA released a message to industry on Federal ELD Enforcement timelines. The full enforcement date was set to take effect on June 12th of this year. In the release, which can be accessed below, the CCMTA have announced that full enforcement of the Federal ELD Regulation will be delayed until January 1st of 2023. The current regime of enforcement through education & awareness will continue until that time.
“The PMTC is in favour of the delay of full enforcement of the ELD mandate. While we have always been in full support of the ELD regulation, the continued issues with a lack of approved devices have continued to plague the mandate, and although we now have 22 approved, industry has not been provided enough of a runway to select a device of their choice and implement it into their fleet in time for the June 12th deadline. We are also waiting for a PKI vendor and system to be announced by Transport Canada that allows for ELD data to be transferred securely from the device to enforcement personnel, as well as enforcement protocols, training and how the regulation will be enforced uniformly between jurisdictions. This final delay provides enough time for industry to select a new approved device, or transition from their current device, in time to comply with the mandate, as well as provide enough time for regulators to address some of the issues mentioned. I suspect this will be the last delay in full enforcement we can expect to see, and carriers should ensure they are fully prepared to comply by January of 2023.”

Milton, ON:
The Private Motor Truck Council of Canada and Benchmark Sponsor, Ontario Truck Driving School, have announced that the 6th annual PMTC Canadian Private Fleet benchmarking survey instrument is live as of today, February 7th. This study is open for completion by all Private Fleets which have a base of operations in Canada. PMTC Membership is not a requirement.
“For the last 5 years the PMTC has partnered with the National Private Truck Council and re-introduced the first Canadian specific private benchmarking survey reports since 2011” remarked PMTC President Mike Millian. “The response to these surveys and the quality of the Benchmarking report produced have been gratifying and provide a valuable tool and resource to our membership. As a result, we are once again partnering with the NPTC for the 2022 Survey.
This input is invaluable in ensuring the survey instrument is current, relevant and valuable to Canadian fleets.
This free value to our members would not be possible without the support of our Sponsor for 2022, Ontario Truck Driving School. “We are thrilled that OTDS has choose to partner with the PMTC and its members and has chosen to invest in sponsoring this survey for a 3rd consecutive year! This sponsorship helps to cover the costs of the report, which allows the PMTC to provide this report free to its membership.”, continued Millian.
We are proud to help the PMTC make this resource available to its members” stated OTDS President and CEO Gus Rahim.

The PMTC has concerns about the effects the upcoming border vaccine mandates for essential workers are going to have on an already fractured supply chain. With the support of your board of directors, we have reached out to officials on the Canadian and US side of the border and encourage you to do the same. Feel free to use some points from the attached communications if you wish, as well as the stats from the survey. You do not need to have a trucking fleet to express your concerns. If you depend on trucks to get your products back and forth across the Canada-US border, this mandate is likely to have a severe effect on you as well.
Feel free to reach back if you have any questions or concerns.

PMTC & the PMTC Young Leaders Group donate to B.C. Flood relief efforts
The PMTC’s board of directors have voted unanimously to donate $1500.00 to the Salvation Army to help those in need as a result of the devastating effects of the floods that continue to batter the people of British Columbia. “The effects of the atmospheric river that occurred in B.C. on November 15th, and the follow up storms that have continued, have caused devasting effects on people’s lives in the great Province of B.C., with many people being homeless and having to be evacuated. “Commented PMTC President Mike Millian. “We have also seen such damage to infrastructure that the flow of goods from the rest of the country to and from the lower mainland of B.C. has been challenging and will continue to be for quite some time. We felt this small gesture was the least we could do, and we encourage all others in the industry to consider making a donation as well. A secure link to do so is below.

In addition, the PMTC Young Leaders Group is hosting their annual Christmas meeting and trivia night, this year virtually, on December 9th at 7pm. In previous years, the group has donated to the local area food bank of one it’s members. This year, the group has chosen to donate to the flood efforts in B.C. as well and will be donating $500.00 to the salvation army B.C. relief fund.
PMTC Chair Matt Richardson added “Around the holiday season the YLG always looks to give back whether that be to local food banks or community organizations but this year, it was an easy decision to direct our donations and the donations of our membership to the relief efforts in British Columbia. What has transpired there is devastating in a number of ways and every little bit helps.”
Registration to attend the event is free, however the YLG encourages everyone who attends to consider a donation the fund. If you are interested in attending, please back to the PMTC office at

Vaccination Status Survey |
The Canadian and US governments have both recently announced that essential travelers, including truck drivers, must be fully vaccinated to enter their countries via the land border. For those entering Canada, the policy is set take effect on January 15th, and for those entering the US, it will kick in on January 22nd. The PMTC has been lobbying to have this policy reversed for the Trucking Industry, or at the very least, delayed, as we believe it will have dire effects on the supply chain between our two countries. We are looking to inform government with hard data and need your help to do so.
Please take a moment and complete this survey by end of day on Sunday November 28th.
Results will remain confidential, and data will be combined.

Public Advisory: Repairs Ongoing on Trans-Canada Highway in Southwestern Newfoundland
Transportation and Infrastructure
November 25, 2021
Construction to repair damaged sections of the Trans-Canada Highway in southwestern Newfoundland began today. Four areas of the Trans-Canada Highway and other highways in the region were damaged by heavy rainfalls earlier this week.
Water levels have subsided and crews have mobilized materials and heavy equipment to the region to prepare for new culverts to be installed.
The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure anticipates culverts arriving in the region today. All repairs to damaged highways are being completed on a priority basis.
Crews continue to monitor and assess infrastructure in the region. Motorists in the region are urged to avoid the areas to allow contractors to complete work as quickly as possible.
Updates are being provided as they become available. Additional details on the closures and other highway construction projects are available on www.nl511.ca and the NL 511 smartphone app.
U.S. NEXUS/FAST Enrollment Centers to Re-Open November 29
Release Date:
November 15, 2021
Washington, D.C. — U.S. Customs and Border Protection is pleased to announce that the NEXUS and U.S./Canada FAST enrollment centers in the United States will reopen on November 29, 2021. It should be noted, however, that the NEXUS and FAST enrollment centers in Canada will continue to be closed until further notice.
Starting today, conditionally approved applicants may schedule interviews at available NEXUS and U.S./Canada FAST enrollment centers in the United States. Appointments must be booked through the Trusted Traveler portal: https://ttp.dhs.gov/ and will have dates available starting November 29.
Applicants entering the U.S. to complete their interview must meet all applicable travel requirements: Fact Sheet: Guidance for Travelers to Enter the U.S. at Land Ports of Entry and Ferry Terminals | Homeland Security (dhs.gov)
CBP asks all applicants to be patient with the system as there is large backlog of applications to be processed by a limited number of open enrollment centers. In order to prioritize new applicants needing interviews, CBP is asking existing NEXUS and FAST members to refrain from booking an appointment at this time. However, existing members are encouraged to renew their membership before their expiry date on their cards to maintain their membership privileges until able to complete their interviews at a later time.
NEXUS is a program run jointly between the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and Customs and Border Protection. It is designed to speed up border crossings for low-risk, pre-approved travelers into Canada and the United States. FAST is a joint program between the CBSA and CBP that enhances border and trade security while making cross-border commercial shipments simpler and subject to fewer delays.
Interested travelers can apply through the Trusted Traveler Programs website. The non-refundable application fee for a five-year FAST membership is $50 and applications must be submitted online. Once the applicant successfully passes a background check, a CBP officer will conduct an interview with the applicant at select locations in the U.S. to make a final eligibility determination.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation's borders at and between official ports of entry. CBP is charged with securing the borders of the United States while enforcing hundreds of laws and facilitating lawful trade and travel.
Are your employees properly trained for working safely with the COVID-19 reality?
Covid-19 has been a major part of our lives, day in and day out since government shutdowns and restrictions took place in Mid March of this year. We have been living with this in every aspect of our lives for over 7 months, and with the throws of the second wave upon us, it is not going away anytime soon. We as a society have learned a lot since the early days of the pandemic as the science has evolved. We know the simple things that we can do to protect ourselves and others, like wear masks, physically distance, wash our hands, clean and disinfect frequently, just to name a few. Unfortunately, what we have also seen, is a large amount of misleading information. This misinformation is not only shared on social media but has been spread around by some world leaders and on some mainstream media outlets. This has led to a large amount of confusion and made it so it is not always easy for people to trust or understand what steps they should truly take to reduce the spread of this virus.
While employers have done their best to ensure they take the steps required to protect their employee’s and visitors from contact with the virus, it is not always easy to ensure your entire workforce understands how the virus itself works and why the steps that the company has put in place need to be followed. Governments have done a great job providing guidance documents and best practices for workplaces to follow, and this has been invaluable to employers. For a program to have the best rate of success however, a true understanding of the virus is needed by those who are required to follow the guidance. It is no different than hiring a driver and asking them to drive your truck safely and efficiently. In order for that to occur, we can’t just hire a driver who has a proper license and send them out on their own. When they come on board, we spend time to mentor them, refine their skills and teach them the specific skills needed for handling the equipment, freight, and customers. Sending them out and telling them to be safe will never work if we do not provide the means and knowledge to achieve this ask. With this in mind, how many companies have been able to provide training to all of their employees on COVID-19 and how the virus works? My guess is this is a low percentage, and through no fault of your own. With the virus being so new, the training programs, for the most part, have yet to be developed. In addition, companies have been working hard to ensure they keep up with and follow ever changing government guidelines and regulations, not to mention just trying to keep the lights on and employees on the payroll. This has been a challenging and unprecedented time for everyone, with no playback or history to refer to as to how to handle this situation.
With this in mind, the PMTC Board of Directors has agreed to partner with Bluedrop Learning Networks, a Canadian-based globally recognized e-learning innovator to bring a proven COVID-19 Work Safe training course to our membership, and for our extended carrier and stakeholder groups.
Bluedrop’s interactive online training course, which launched with great success by the Province of Newfoundland & Labrador in July, was developed under the guidance of several noted national experts, including Canada’s former Deputy Chief Public Health Officer, Dr. David Mowat. The course has now been tailored specifically for the trucking/shipping/freight management industry.
The results of the training are equally impressive. An online survey of over 200 course registrants was recently conducted to assess its impact. Prior to completing the course, only 49% of survey participants passed a knowledge check on COVID-19 best practices. After completing the course, the pass rate increased to 95%. Overall, participants showed a 53% increase in workplace COVID-19 safety knowledge after completing the course. 81% of those completing the course said that they now felt ‘very confident’
in their ability to keep their co-workers and customers safe from COVID-19. Finally, 95% of survey respondents stated they would encourage their co-workers to complete this training.
The COVID-19 Work Safe Course has since been adopted by WCB agencies and employer groups in Nova Scotia, Ontario, and Manitoba with more to be announced shortly. Bluedrop CEO Emad Rizkalla recently showcased the solution at the 22nd World Congress on Health and Safety at Work as an example of global innovation in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In the next few weeks the course will become available on the PMTC website at www.pmtc.ca, and we will provide more information at that time. The PMTC will receive zero revenue from this course offer, nor will Bluedrop. The reason for this partnership is to make the course available for as many companies and employees as possible, to ensure we all have the tools to reduce the spread of COVID-19 to keep all of us safe!
In the meantime, for more information on the training or the impact that it's having, feel free to visit the SkillsPass Resource Page, and you can also register for the free 30-minute overview webinar on October 29, 2020 at 1pm EST. You can register HERE
