Carriers can now apply for a permit to allow the use of Smart Life Axles on designated Safe, Productive, and Infrastructure-Friendly tractor semi- and double-trailer configurations under Ontario Regulation 413/05, Vehicle Weights and Dimensions (VWD) for Safe, Productive, and Infrastructure-Friendly (SPIF) Vehicles. The Ministry of Transportation launched the permit program in May 2018.
Smart Lift Axles (SLA) systems are a suspension technology for tractor semi- and double-trailer configurations that automatically lifts one or more axles in an axle grouping when the remaining weight is within the allowable regulated axle weight limit for the remaining deployed axles. A load sensing control device within the systems monitors axle weights.
Lifting the non-required axle(s) reduces drag, which can save fuel and reduce emissions and wear on tires and components. SLA systems are well suited for multi-stop delivery services where weight decreases as freight is delivered, reducing the number of axles required over the duration of the trip. In addition, SLA-equipped semi-trailers do not modify or deteriorate dynamic performance and allow vehicles to meet SPIF standards.
