PMTC is very excited about the new ‘Driven to Lead’ program for young professionals in the industry. PMC went to Young Leader Group chair Matt Richardson to find out more about this innovative program.
Q - How did the idea for ‘Driven to Lead’ come about?
A - The idea for the certificate program came about through numerous conversations with YLG Board Members, and PMTC Leadership. With the YLG growing, we wanted to come up with a program that would help grow leadership skills not only with young leaders, but any current or up and coming leaders within the industry. It was about a year from concept to finished program.
Q - Does the program’s curriculum relate to the generic world of business or has it been customized for the trucking industry?
A – It’s a mix of both. There are many traits of good leaders that can be transferred across industries; however there is also some uniqueness to the transportation industry and the challenges our leaders face and this program will cover both.
Q - Why did the group choose Eagle’s Flight as the program’s facilitator?
A - We looked at a number of different firms that provide leadership training, narrowed down the list, and we are very happy to have partnered with Eagles Flight. They have a proven track record when it comes to Experiential Education and have experience in working with companies from the transportation industry. They come very highly recommended. Matt Hill will be facilitating the program. Over the last year, Eagles Flight has delivered some shorter training sessions at PMTC YLG seminars and the reviews have been fantastic!
Q - Is registration limited?
Are there any registrations to date?
A - The registration is limited to the first 20 registered. We do have some registrants to date, but there remains room for more. Interest is generating quickly however, so consider signing up soon so you don’t miss out.
Q - Is this a ‘one shot deal’ for 2018-2019, or will it be offered again?
A - If this year’s program succeeds, which we are obviously planning on, then more programs will be offered in the future. We’d like to have another program for graduates of the ‘Driven to Lead’ program, and offer the initial leadership certificate program once again to a new group, so you have continuing education for the future of our industry.
Q - The optimum situation would be signing up for all modules, but can each module stand on its own as a valuable learning experience?
A - Participants do have the option to sign up for individual modules. Each module can stand on its own as a valuable learning experience, and participants would get completion certificates for the module(s) completed. However to earn the leadership diploma, all four modules must be completed.
Q – Besides professional development, are there any other benefits from taking the program?
A - All graduates of the 2018/2019 Driven to Lead Program will receive free registration to the 2019 PMTC Conference (a $500 value), where they will be presented their certificates in front of the delegates at a graduating ceremony.
Q - KRTS Transportation Specialists Inc. and TransRep Inc. have been very generous with their platinum sponsorship. Why did they choose to do so?
A - The owners of KRTS and TransRep believe strongly in the future of the trucking industry; and that our current young leaders (and younger individuals striving toward leadership roles) need to be invested in it to set them up for success. It’s not only an investment in the participants, but it’s also an investment in our industry.
Q - Where will the program be held?
A - The program will be held at EaglesFlight, in Guelph. It’s truly an amazing facility.
