Repairs have been made on the Trans-Canada Highway in southwestern Newfoundland to allow traffic to flow Monday (November 29) at two of the four damaged areas.

The highway will reopen north of Little Paradise Park. Updates will be provided by noon Monday.

Traffic will be reduced to one lane in some areas.

Motorists are reminded obey traffic control and watch for heavy equipment and crews working in the area.

Repairs are also progressing as planned near the weigh scales outside Port au Basques and near Little Paradise Park.

The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure anticipates the areas near the Port aux Basques weigh scales and at Little Paradise Park reopening to traffic mid-week.

Updates are being provided as they become available.

While repairs continues, the public is asked to follow the advice and direction of emergency officials and stay away from the damaged areas. Avoiding these areas will allow crews to complete the work in a more timely manner.

Vaccination Status Survey

The Canadian and US governments have both recently announced that essential travelers, including truck drivers, must be fully vaccinated to enter their countries via the land border. For those entering Canada, the policy is set take effect on January 15th, and for those entering the US, it will kick in on January 22nd. The PMTC has been lobbying to have this policy reversed for the Trucking Industry, or at the very least, delayed, as we believe it will have dire effects on the supply chain between our two countries. We are looking to inform government with hard data and need your help to do so.

Please take a moment and complete this survey by end of day on Sunday November 28th.

Results will remain confidential, and data will be combined.

Please see Hwy 1 update below from B.C.

As we have had numerous questions on Highways 1 and 5 in regard to full reconnection, to be clear, the Hwy 1 closure through the Canyon pass and the Hwy 5 closure, the Coquihalla Hwy, from Merritt to Hwy 3, are long term closures. Assessments are on going, however significant damage occurred on several sections of these 2 highways, and it will likely be months before they are connected all the way through the province. Hwy 3 and in transit through the US are the only likely options to get goods in and out of the lower mainland of B.C. for some time into the future. If you have questions on exploring these options, please reach back to the PMTC office.

Highway 1 will reopen through the Fraser Valley between Chilliwack and Abbotsford at 2 p.m. (Pacific time), Thursday, Nov. 25, following cleanup, repairs and geotechnical assessments of the highway and its structures.

This reopening will help connect the Lower Mainland through to Highway 3 and the Interior. While this will help to reduce congestion on Highway 7, travel restrictions will remain in place on Highway 7 to ensure the safe movement of essential goods and services.

Although it is not subject to the essential travel order, people are asked to stay off Highway 1 through Abbotsford unless necessary. Drivers can expect slow traffic with reduced speed limits. When the highway reopens, the interchange at No. 3 Road will not be accessible due to closures on the municipal road network.

Commercial vehicles over 63,500 kilograms are prohibited from travelling on Highway 1 between Abbotsford and Chilliwack at this time.

Highway 1 through the Fraser Valley and Fraser Canyon was closed by flooding and debris slides on Sunday, Nov. 14.

Repairs to Highway 1 at the Sumas River Bridge were completed on Nov. 24, after the westbound approach failed during the heavy rain events. Additional repairs along the highway corridor will be ongoing throughout the coming weeks.

The section of Highway 1 through Bridal Falls between Highway 9 and Hope was reopened the evening of Nov. 20. This section of highway remains one lane in each direction for essential travel only, with cleanup and repairs ongoing.

Into the Fraser Canyon, Highway 1 between Hope and Boothroyd, just east of Boston Bar, has been open since Nov. 21. Highway 1 remains closed from Boothroyd through to Spences Bridge and damage assessments are ongoing.

Environment and Climate Change Canada has special weather statements in effect for Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley, Squamish to Whistler and the Sunshine Coast from now into next week. Flood conditions may arise in the areas over the period of these storms. The River Forecast Centre has issued high streamflow advisories for all regions of the Coast.

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure is monitoring the weather and the performance of the highway. People should be aware that Highway 1 and others could be closed at any time, should conditions deteriorate.
